The New Galaxy S8 Phablets And Everything Samsung Just Unveiled

 

During a very recent press event held in the Big Apple, Samsung took the opportunity to officially announce its highly awaited flagship devices. But that is not all, the South Korean tech giant also unveiled loads of other interesting stuff. Here is your guide to all the shiny new toys that the company has just introduced.

The Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus

The Galaxy S8 features a 5.8 inch display screen that stylishly curves to the sides, seemingly wrapping around the device’s ultra thin and nearly bezel-less frame (which means that the fingerprint scanner is now on the back side). The phablet is also the first ever device to be preinstalled with Samsung’s new digital assistant offering, Bixby (more on this later), and also the first to be equipped with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chip set. Some of the more notable features include iris scanning and facial recognition technology. It also comes with dual 12 megapixel cameras on the rear, a water proof design (with an IP68 rating), wireless charging capabilities, and a headphone jack.

As for the Galaxy S8 Plus, it features a gargantuan 6.2 inch screen. Apart from that giant display, the bigger of the two new phablets basically shares most of the specifications present in the Galaxy S8. 

Bixby AI Assistant

In a bid to compete against Apple’s Siri and Google’s Assistant, Samsung debuts Bixby, which is now made available in beta on the new Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus devices. For now, it will coexistent with Google Assistant, but in future Galaxy models, it is a good bet that Samsung will work to have Bixby as the primary artificial intelligence driven digital assistant, further fueling its ambitions to also dominate the AI arena.

Gear VR with Controller

Samsung had actually already teased its Gear VR headset during the annual Mobile World Congress, which was held earlier this year in the beautiful city of Barcelona in Spain. Now, the South Korean mobile manufacturer has formally announced the headset, which is compatible with the new Galaxy S8 devices, and also comes with a controller in the box. According to Samsung, those who are preordering the Galaxy S8 will get the Gear VR as a free add-on.

Gear 360 (2017)

It is cool that Samsung has incorporated some updates to its Gear 360 virtual reality camera. The original model came with some issues, but the company was wise to introduce some enhancements, including shrinking the 360 degree camera to bitter fit users’ pockets.

DeX Dock

Soon to be owners of the Galaxy S8 can actually the handset as a desktop computer by way of the DeX Dock. Basically this desktop dock allows users to add a mouse, keyboard, and even a monitor to the phablet.

Connect Home

Homes are getting more connected in the 21st century (through this thing called the Internet of Things), and Samsung’s new Connect Home router should further push the envelope. It is compatible with the South Korean tech giant’s own Smart Things platform, demonstrating how a router can effectively become a smart home hub.
