New Year's Savings Resolutions

A few ways to save money... perhaps $1,000 or more.... in 2006, without changing your lifestyle in any way:

Cingular Global Packages

Cingular recently announced new pricing and packages for those customers who need international service. If you are a Cingular customer, contact 1-866-CINGULAR to add these to your existing service. If you want to get Cingular service, start here to compare domestic rate plans.

Who's the Thinnest?

With the arrival of the Samsung A900and the CDMA version of the Razr V3c, we thought we'd check to see who was the thinnest.

Well, turns out it is basically a tie. However, for those into exacting numbers, the original Razr V3 is 0.54 inches, the Razr V3c is 0.57 inches, and the Samsung A900 is 0.6 inches. (These numbers are derived from the Motorola and Samsung websites, my eyesight isn't good enough to find 3 or 6 hundredths of an inch).

There's now a thin phone available for just about every carrier. Prices are after rebate, with new carrier service, as of 12/26/05:

Fed Raises Interest Rates, Prime Rate to Follow

For the 13th consecutive meeting, the Federal Reserve today raised the Fed Funds rate 1/4%. This will translate into an increase in the prime rate to 7.25%, almost double the 4% rate when these increases started.

If you have a variable rate credit card, you've likely noticed your interest rates ticking up, as most of these are tied to the prime rate. With holiday spending underway, those who carry a balance this year may end up paying much more in finance charges than last year.

Gathering around the Phone to Watch TV??

It seems almost daily that deals are being announced for TV content on iPod or on cell phones. Saw a press release today for Amp'd Mobile (a soon-to-launch new wireless reseller targeting young people). They are going to offer clips from CBS shows like CSI: NY and The King of Queens. Sprint Nextel inked a deal where they are going to stream full-length movies on cell phones.

A Cell Phone Option for Younger Children

The Firefly cell phone is now available from Cingular. This is a simplified phone designed for children under 12. The Firefly has just a few buttons, including Mom and Dad call keys, and a 911 assistance button. It also offers a 20-number phone book. All the preceding are parent-programmed. The Call Screening option limits the phone to only accept calls from stored contacts.

T-Mobile Cuts Prices

This year has seen a number of 'stealth' price increases by the largest wireless carriers. The stealth part comes in because the way the carriers have done this is by reducing the number of plan options. For example, Cingular & Verizon have nothing between 450 and 900 minutes. Since many people fall inbetween there, the choice is to take the lower plan ($40) and pay overage, or the higher plan for $60 a month. The net effect is higher average bills.

Woohoo --- $2.50 Music Downloads for your Phone

Okay, I'm not the sharpest axe in the toolshed so maybe I'm missing something, but I'm a bit skeptical of this new music download service being announced by Sprint-Nextel today. This is conceptually a good idea --- why carry two devices (a phone and an MP3 player), when one can do both. However, as with the recently launched iTunes Phone, it is poorly executed.

Dwelling on Insurance

Got my annual homeowners bill from State Farm the other day, with the annual 15-20% rate hike. My bill has doubled over the past 7 years, even though I've never made a claim. I guess they can afford to be "Like a Good Neighbor" if all you ever do is send them money...

Anyway, I'm sure they are a fine insurance company, if a claim needs to be paid --- the point here is not to bash them. However, I did decide to investigate if another company could offer me comparable coverage for less. The answer was yes.... and in fact my new premium will be about 45% lower!

Fight Back Against $3.00 Gas

Here's a good credit card offer that will help cut your gas bill and with holiday purchases. It's the Chase PerfectCard. Benefits include a 6% rebate on all gas purchases at any gas station during the first 90 days, and 3% thereafter. Additionally, you'll pay 0% interest on purchases or balance transfer for a year. There is also no annual fee.

==UPDATE -- 10/31/05==

If you frequent Shell stations, check out the new Shell MasterCard, issued by Citibank. This card offers 5% rebates on Shell gas purchases as a permanent feature, not just during the introductory period.
