U.S. Cellular Customers, Welcome to the Magenta Club

T‑Mobile has officially completed its acquisition of U.S. Cellular’s wireless business, bringing more than four million former U.S. Cellular customers into its fold. 

As announced by T‑Mobile, the deal closed on August 1, 2025, and includes nearly all U.S. Cellular stores, spectrum assets, and customer lines. According to U.S. Cellular’s publicly released info, the company retains a collection of towers and some spectrum under a new name and management team.

Meanwhile, approval from the Justice Department in mid‑July allowed the merger to move forward. One condition of the deal was T‑Mobile’s commitment to eliminate its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs—something it confirmed in a public letter on July 9, followed by FCC approval shortly after.

You might consider taking a customer‑centred angle for your piece: rather than focusing on technical or legal details, highlight what this means in practical terms for former U.S. Cellular customers. Their plans stay unchanged for now, and most devices should keep working smoothly on the T‑Mobile network. 

Over the coming months, broader coverage and faster data are expected as the two systems merge. T‑Mobile is also expanding access to its stores, support channels, and perks like unlimited plans and streaming benefits.

It’s also interesting that the old U.S. Cellular brand isn’t disappearing completely—but transforming. The remaining company has been renamed Array Digital Infrastructure, Inc., and will focus on managing cell towers and spectrum, no longer competing in retail. Doug Chambers, formerly CFO of U.S. Cellular, is now serving as interim CEO of the new venture.

This story could be framed around how customers are likely to feel more connected (literally), with broader coverage, without needing to switch phones or plans immediately. At the same time, it also reflects a shift in the industry: consolidation among the “Big Three” carriers, and smaller providers pivoting toward infrastructure roles.
