Some T-Mobile Legacy Plan Users Report Forced Changes and Higher Bills

T-Mobile customers on some of the company’s oldest wireless plans may be running into a new problem: being moved to different plans, sometimes with a much higher monthly bill. While the change does not appear to affect everyone, a small number of users with very old legacy plans are starting to see forced plan changes.

According to Android Authority, the plans being affected seem to be older options that were not changed or raised in price last year. The report says these appear to be plans from well before T-Mobile’s Price Lock era, including certain Simple Choice plans.

The report shares that a verified T-Mobile employee and brand expert on Reddit reported seeing one very old plan switched to another legacy rate plan, with the monthly cost for a five-line account going up by about $100. Other users mentioned smaller or larger increases of their own, with some saying their bills rose by around $15 while others reported increases of $100 or more.

The report also says some legacy customers are seeing old discounts removed, along with other account changes that could make newer plans look more appealing. For customers who have held onto these plans for years, that could be frustrating, especially if the main reason for keeping the older plan was to save money on multiple lines.

There is at least some relief for certain users. Customers whose legacy plans were already hit with an increase last year are probably not part of this latest round. The same may be true for newer legacy plans that still come with price guarantees.

At the same time, the report notes that some of T-Mobile’s oldest plans come with trade-offs, such as slower data speeds, limited data options, and other restrictions that newer plans may not have. Even so, the bigger issue for many families is not whether a newer plan has better features, but whether the higher price is worth it.

If these reported changes continue, some T-Mobile users may have to decide whether it makes sense to stay put, accept a newer plan, or look at other carriers. For people with several lines on one account, even a modest increase can make a big difference over the course of a year.
