David Pogue Goes Populist on the Cell Phone Industry

There was an interesting column Thursday (July 23, 2009) about aggravating cell phone company policies by technology writer David Pogue of the New York Times. He argued the pros and cons of exclusivity agreements on cell phone devices (such as the iPhone with AT&T) and whether Congress should intervene to eliminate. However, the main thrust of the article is that if the government were to intervene, there are other areas, that affect many more people, that should be looked at first.

Cell Phone Rebate Offer

Let MyRatePlan pay your activation fee!    For a limited time, MyRatePlan will rebate $36 for a qualifying single line plan or $72 for a qualifying family plan that is purchased via the site.  Since most carriers charge about $35 per line, this will offset the activation cost for up to two lines.   See rebate form for full terms, conditions and restrictions.

T-Mobile Improves Rate Plans

T-Mobile has launched a number of improvements to its single and family calling plans, including its very popular myFaves plans. Already offering an attractive number of minutes at each price point (vs. its national competitors AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon), these changes further separate it from the pack.

Free Activation from AT&T

This special offer from AT&T expires March 22nd at midnight.   You must click the image below to get to the promotion. The link goes to the touch screen LG Vu; you can browse and switch to a different phone.

Emergence of Unlimited Cell Phone Plans

Most carriers now offer a variant on the unlimited cell phone plan.   The days of rate plans segmented by minutes will likely come to an end in the next couple years.   We’ll probably be left with unlimited rate plans and, for very light users, pay-as-you-go plans.   Some of the prepaid offers have actually undercut the national carriers’ contract plans.    This is somewhat different than traditional prepaid minutes that have usually been more expensive.     However, those customers willing to sign a contract usually have access to better phones at a much lower price.

Free Lifeline Cell Phone Service

For those who qualify and who only need a cell phone for emergency situations, you may be able to get a cell  phone and monthly allowance of minutes for free.   A company called SafeLink Wireless is offering this in several states and it will soon expand to others.  (Check their website for availability in your location).

T-Mobile Launches $50 Unlimited Retention Plan

According to RCR News (subscription may be required to read), T-Mobile is now offering a $50 unlimited calling plan to all existing customers who have been with them for 22 months or longer.   No additional contract extension is required.

Verizon to Launch "Friends & Family"

This Sunday, February 15th, Verizon will launch a new feature on select rate plans called "Friends & Family". Similar to programs at T-Mobile (MyFaves) and Alltel (My Circle) -- now owned by Verizon -- customers will be allowed to select a group of numbers to whom they can make and receive calls, without the airtime counting against their monthly allowance. It will be available to both new and existing Verizon customers.

MetroPCS Arrives in Boston & New York

MetroPCS, which offers unlimited local calling in plans ranging from $30 to $50 per month, has now launched service in New York City and Boston areas. The New York coverage area goes from a line roughly from New Brunswick and Paterson, NJ eastward through the 5 boroughs of New York City through the western half of Long Island, including Islip and Smithtown. The area also includes a bit of southern Westchester County. (Yonkers and White Plains).
