High Speed Internet via Satellite
Many rural areas are still not serviced by cable modem or DSL, the 2 primary land-based
methods that offer high speed Internet access. Now there's an option for the rest of us:
Internet via Satellite.
Overall, this is a good solution for those who cannot get other methods of broadband,
offering an always-on connection, with speeds of about 10-12 times that of 56k dial-up.
However, we will tell you that this is not nearly as fast as DSL or cable modem, and the
cost is fairly steep. That in mind, we'd recommend seeing if these other
high-speed options are available where you live, before going the satellite route.
Visit our DSL or cable modem pages to
check availability in your area.
If you are interested in exploring the satellite Internet option, the leading provider is
HughesNet (formerly Direcway).
